Shifting Strategy Based on Voter Patterns to Go Unbeaten in Tempe Elections

Following the 2022 Tempe municipal election, the political campaign organizers managing a candidate’s campaign for Tempe City Council wanted to understand why their candidate had not performed as well as they hoped and understand if there were key strategic lessons to be taken from this race, that could be applied to the next race to be more successful. They wanted to understand how their candidate performed relative to other candidates on a precinct level and related to the number of undervotes that occurred within those areas.

Challenges

Why did we not perform as well as we had hoped in the election and what can the data tell us about how different hypotheses?

If we were to have ran our campaign differently, how would we have ran it differently to win?

Key Results

Identified, loaded, and transformed 8+ historical Tempe municipal voting and GIS data sets, assembling them into usable data files that could assess the election completely surrounding turnout, votes, and undervotes.

Delivered and presented dashboards that told the story of where the candidate performed well and where they could have performed better, and what alternative strategies they might have used.
